Ombre Cake

blue ombre cake

A friend in my ward asked me to make a baby shower cake for her sister that’s pregnant for the first time.  I’m assuming from the colors they chose (grey, orange, and blue) that she was going to be having a boy but either way I was excited to be a part of it.  She sent me lots of pictures to give me ideas where they were going with decorations and I decided now would be a great time to try out that new ombre effect.

I picked out three different shades of blue and went to work.  The hardest part about this technique is that you can’t rush it.  If you rush it your dots might not be in exact alignment or your might pipe out too much frosting creating a larger dot than the others but really even with that happening to this cake it still turned out beautiful!!!

  1. This is absolutely beautiful! I have a baby shower cake/cupcakes that I am making this weekend and have been wracking my brain trying figure out a cute but simple way to decorate the top layer cake. I’ve been looking around and I think ombre may be my answer! I was wondering, what did you use to color your icing, and how much of the blue did you use to make it the various shades? Thanks!
